Automation firing without new files being created

Post by schwendo » Tue Aug 15, 2017 3:46 pm

For the last couple of weeks we have been experiencing triggers firing after hours. This seems to be after a data file server reboot or a com drop. The data files are not changing but most of our triggers are firing.
Is there a log file Automation uses to track if a file has changed? where does it live? Is anyone else seeing this?
we are using automation 1.5.1 build 13036

Thanks Joe

Hi schwendo,

You are sure that files' timestamps are not changing? Perhaps it might be caused by some virus scanner checking files?

Automation must not trigger upon the already processed files. Automation remembers timestamps of each file and will not trigger upon it again. When Automation service restarts Automation can trigger upon the files that have appeared in the monitored folder, while Automation is offline. There is a setting "Track changes while trigger is inactive" in the Execution settings. However, this one probably does not relate to your case...

Is there any good reason to leave the already processed files in the monitored folder?
The best practice would be to either delete the processed trigger file or to move it on the "archive" folder. The options for both are available in the trigger properties (delete in Execution section and move in Other section).

FYI, there is a newer build of Automation 1.5.1 available. You can download build 13043. Just download "Automation Easy". When you install it on top of your Automation, your license will be preserved.
However, looking at the release information, I do not see any bugfix specific for your problem...

Thanks for the reply Sasso. your support is always fast and good :)

It has been working fine for years. It was noticed that the servers had a time sync issue. Triggers set for longer intervals did not fire. We have changed setting to 10 sec intervals from 5 and will see.

We will be updating everything and if that fails will move the files.

We have 40 triggers and I need the datafiles where the labels expect them as I often go into manual mode when we have server issues. We are a clinical lab and cant have any downtime. I will keep that option in mind. We have discussed it already.

Are you intersted in knowing if the increased time solves it? Will be a week before im comfortable its fixed.

Yes, please let me know if the change in polling interval helps.
But if "it has been working fine for years", something must have changed on your system...

Have you tried using the "automatically detect changes" option instead of using polling (check for changes in folder in intervals)? With automatic method, Windows OS notifies Automation of file changes. This works faster, but is not compatible with all network environments.
