Not including standard printer in label possible?

Post by Thomas Touzimsky » Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:46 pm

After installing our first printer in another department I ran into a problem involving printer settings saved with the label vs. what is actually installed on the host PC.

We are currently planning to install four printers in various departments (three of them local, one in another city). Our labels are saved on a network share so we won't have to edit four different files once a layout changes. Each department will print on their own printer.

The problem is that the labels we edit seem to save our standard printer with them which causes another popup on the remote machine since they obviously don't have our printer installed (and even if they had, it would make no sense since it's in the wrong office) and they have to manually choose the printer they have already set as standard in the NLP config tool.

We are planning to use the software all throughout our European branches next year, but I don't think they will be too happy about the same popup appearing every time they want to print a bunch of labels. :?

You could simply double click on the label's background and enable the "Always Use The Default Printer". Then your label will always open with the default printer set on the destination computer.

Do you require a different approach?

I tried my best to follow what you were saying in your original post, but what I do in all my label forms (I've got around 50 different label forms, 10 different printers installed, hundreds of labels, etc.).

In NiceForm, create the variable Printers; give it about 255 characters.

Then create a combo box, using that variable printers. Double click on the combo box.

Click on Values --> Edit and selected "Installed Printers" from drop down box.

Click OK, save.

After that - double click on the Print button --> Events --> Actions.

Add a Set Variable and use the variable Printers. Click Ok, save.

So from now on, no matter what computer runs the label form, the drop down box will display and allow them to select any printer which is installed on the computer.

Just another suggestion, thats all. :)

Right now we don't use NiceForm but open the label in NiceLabel Pro (Print Only on the clients) and print it from there instead. Switching to NiceForm at a later stage is an option, so I will keep your suggestion in mind. :)

You labels must be defined in a way to recall printer settings from the driver each time the label is opened.

Do the following:
  1. Open File -> Label Setup.
  2. On Printer tab, select Use default printer settings from the printer driver.
  3. You will have to apply steps 1-2 to all labels.
Follow the instructions from goombatommy how to create the printer selection in the form.

Additional info:
  • See the sample forms that are installed with NiceForm. Some of them also have printer selection functionality.
    c:\Program Files\EuroPlus\NiceLabel 5\Samples\Forms
  • See the Knowledge Base article KB107.
  • If you change the settings in the printer driver while the form application is running, the form will not see the changes. You will have to restart it.
