Variables from Excel Spreadsheet

Post by Spikenaylor » Tue Jun 17, 2014 2:27 pm

Hi

Is it possible to pull a dropdown list of variables from excel spreadsheet.

Been playing with Nicelable Pro and can use the variables option to create a combo box option, but would be easier to store those variables in the excel spreadsheet for any future change to those variables.

Regards
Spike

Yes, you can.
Just not in the label designer (application NiceLabel Pro), but in the form designer (application NiceForm).

NiceForm allows you to build front-end printing applications without any programming skills. Build your application in a similar way as you (or your kids ) use LEGO bricks.

This is a list of data sources you can feed combo box object with.

Use database values (Excel supported) is one of the options.

You must have the product NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop to use NiceForm in the full-featured mode.

That looks just the ticket.

on the license front, Can we purchase NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop for designing and then use Nicelabel Print for end users to print using shared network drive to store the labels and database

What would be the most cost effecitve way of getting end users to be able to print the labels without any editing facility.

You need one designer, this might be one copy of NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop.
For print-only users you could purchase NiceLabel PowerForms Runtime (each concurrent user needs a license).

If you have many users then NiceLabel PowerForms Multi-user will be the best choice. The lowest number of users is 5, you can upgrade to more. Each license has full design capabilities, but you can enable print-only mode as well.

Please contact your NiceLabel reseller for more info.

Ongoing form the previous post,

I have set up my spreadsheet with date fields

ie .
Date of process
Date of End of Process

I have tried formatting these fields various ways, but when the label software prints, the date fields on the label are in the totally wrong format and include a time.
How Can I format the label field or the spreadsheet field to give me the date format I require shown on the Label?

On Niceform, using the Combobox pulling the values from spreadsheet, how do I get it to populate the label field that I require therefore having the combox selection I picked show up on my printed labels in the field I want populated from the combox selection?

Excel will only provide the data, not formatting.
Any cell formatting that you do inside the spreadsheet is ignored, when the database driver provides data to the application.
You will have to adjust the date formatting on the label. This is done in the properties of variables that you have created on the label.

For example, if you had a variable named "Date of End of Process" defined in the label, you would define the output date format YYYY-MMM-DD in the Validation tab.

To send selected value from a combobox to the label into a particular variable, you have to select that variable in the Combo box properties in the Content tab.

How do you get variables on the form?
It's best that you simply import them from the label. Use Design>Get Variables and select the label file. Alternatively you could manually define the variables in the form. In this case make sure to use the exact names as you have defined in the label.

When the user selects value in the combo box, it is saved to a form variable. If there is the same variable defined in the label, also the label variable will get the same value. If you have a label preview inside your form, it must update with the selected value. The preview proves that value was correctly sent to the label.

Hi
Thanks for that, i was looking in the wrong place for the variable properties, however I get this error
Error.jpg
Date Variable Properties Error from spreadsheet
Error.jpg (20.02 KiB) Viewed 7005 times
The time part is causing the problem.

In the Spreadsheet, I have the Formula =TODAY() to get the date and this should get the date without the time, but the Nicelabel is pulling in the time part of it also.

I am using the date in the spreadsheet as various labels will have various dates on, ie. =Today()+1 or =Today()+3 as we use the labels on various days, but will be printing them all on a specific day.

Any pointers to cure this.

Another question about the combo box.

I have my combobox set up with a list pulled from the spreadsheet containing

process 1
process 2
process 3
process 4

I understand the previous advice about setting the label variable to receive the combobox variable, but my combobox contains text.

What variable do i use in the label to use the result from the combobox, cant see one that will work the way I would like it to.
many thanks for any advice

Ahh

I have fixed the invalid variable Error,

The answer lay in the variable properties and setting allowable characters to ALL

OK, so you are fine now?
Or does some problem still remain?

Not quite home and dry yet.

I still cant work out the combobox issue.

You say the combobox can present a list of text from a spreadsheet, then on choosing a particular text that text can be pushed over into a variable on the label which should show up on the label preview.

I cant seem to work out how to do this. I dont know what type of variable to use on the label for my situation of getting text into it from the form combobox.

The Date Error issue is still not resolved.
It works fine in the label with these settings, I can preview all the labels fine without an error.

In Niceform, The preview shows up correctly, I can enter my batch number fine, then press enter, the label preview is correct.

I then click to preview 2nd label and this error pops up

many thanks for ongoing advice
