Nicelabel Version 5 support ends / update ... migrate to 2017

Post by zieglemi » Tue May 15, 2018 11:00 am

hello

we are currently using nicelabel Version 5 (NiceWatch Enterprice Business Connector) for printing several labeltypes from our ERP System = SAP!

since Version 5.x service supports ends we must decide how we go forward: update to new Version 2017 and so on ...

currently we are using Nicelabel as follows:
+ Nicelabel Designer (to adjust existing labels ... since the last three years only small adjustments were done)
5 different type of labels are in use
+ nicewatch Servermanager (NiceWatch Enterprice Business Connector)
receives via http request labeldata and start generating printfiles (never directprint!)
and stores in pre defined folders for further processing

we do not need instant label preview in SAP and ON-demand printing from our process point of viewing!

i heard that in Version 2017 NO NiceWatch is longer available!

so i would ask the forum which possibilities are available?
upgrading?
migration?

maybe someone have the same topic on his table?
is there a feature in Version 2017 where i can migrate the current NiceWatch development?

Thanks in advance for your time and expertise

regards
michael

Hi Michael,

There is a clear upgrade path from NiceLabel 5 to NiceLabel 2017.

NiceLabel 2017 is a new-generation NiceLabel software, completely rewritten from scratch, but it will support your existing label files and NiceWatch configurations. Some ancient label features might not be available in NiceLabel 2017 anymore (such as OLE objects), or are scheduled to be added in later releases. There is a list of differences / not compatible features (see link below).

NiceLabel 2017 still includes the integration server. We call it NiceLabel Automation. In its essence, it provides the functionality previously offered by NiceWatch. At the same time, it is much easier to use and has a lot of new features. There are several product levels of NiceLabel Automation. Your "NiceWatch Enterprise Business Connector" is comparable to "NiceLabel Automation Enterprise", which is a component of a product NiceLabel LMS Enterprise.

You can easily migrate your existing NiceLabel 5 labeling assets into NiceLabel 2017 platform.
You can test NiceLabel 2017 in the 30-day trial mode.

I suggest the following:
  1. Download trial version of NiceLabel 2017.
You can install NiceLabel 2017 side-by-side with version 5 or use some other computer.
  2. Convert your label files from version 5 to 2017. You can do this manually, label-by-label, with Open/Save As. Or you can use the converter. Download the Label Converter 2017 here.
NOTE: Your labels have to be saved with the latest release of version 5 (5.4.4). If you use some older version, you will have to upgrade NiceLabel 5 to 5.4.4. If you do not want to disturb the current server, you can install NiceLabel Pro 5.4.4 on some other computer, where you will do the label resave.
  3. Start Automation Builder application and load existing NiceWatch configuration. Then select Save As to save the configuration into new Automation-type of a file.
  4. See the KB article about differences in NiceLabel 2017 compared to NiceLabel 6.
  5. Talk to you existing NiceLabel reseller for help, if you do not want to perform the file conversion yourself.
Let me know, if you have any additional question.

hello saso,

i just filled form in and downloaded file ...

one additional question to find the correct update strategie ... can you give me some hints?

currently our Nicelabel Pro and NicelabelWatch is installed on a windows 2003 Server.
my plan is to finally install Nicelabel 2017 on a newer one.
any recommendation?
is windows 2016 server adwiseable?
32Bit or 64Bit? (i think 32bit would be better in case of printer drivers?)

again thx!

Keep NiceLabel V5 where it is and install NiceLabel 2017 on a newer platform. ;-)

You cannot install NiceLabel 2017 on Windows Server 2003. You need .NET Framework 4.5.
See other system requirements.

Windows Server 2016 is supported. Windows Server operating system are available in 64-bit variant only. You can run 32-bit programs on 64-bit operating system, but no the other way around.
NiceLabel 2017 can run as 32-bit or as 64-bit application, dependent on the underlying operating system.
NiceLabel printer drivers are available for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems.

Configuration in NiceWatch was done with the higher-level than your Automation is currently running at.
Automation can run in Easy, Pro and Enterprise levels.

While in trial mode, you can switch between the Automation modes. You can see feature comparison between Pro and Enterprise levels here.

I suggest that you switch into the Enterprise level to make sure all NiceWatch configurations can be loaded.

Do the following:
  1. Open Automation Builder.
  2. Select File>About.
  3. Click Change product level.
  4. Click Enterprise.
  5. Click Switch edition and restart program.
  6. Load NiceWatch configuration again.

hello saso again

so far so good ...
after i imported the labels and jobs i started to begin with only the first trigger:
--> this is defined as a http trigger (receiving a xml-file from SAP) ...

goal of this trigger is to receive data (xml-stucture) from SAP (works) and save the file in predifined folder:
save data received by the trigger to file: e.g. c:\nlspool\labeltype\labeltype_vendor_ ....
e.g. C:\nlspool\[labeltype]\[labeltype]_[vendor]_[purch_order]_[timestamp]_[guid]_[prntquant].xml

but all the variables are empty and i get a filename like this: c:\nlspool\_____.xml
i mapped the variables in the Actions tab Using a "Use Data Filter" but with no success!

any hints ... is there a possibility to activate a logging with detailed debugging informations?

thx for any hints!

regards michael

Hi zieglemi,

Well, you have empty variables and you did something wrong. ;-)
It would help having your configuration...

See the attached configuration I created for your sample XML file.
I manually mapped the fields from the root level in XML. For the fields inside <label /> element I defined "assignment area", where the values from XML elements are automatically mapped with variables of the same name inside trigger configuration.

For testing:
  • You can see the Data Preview section in the Use Data Filter cat. You will see names of variables and their assignment values.
  • You can click Run Preview button to test-execute trigger inside Automation Builder and see the log pane. You can use Message action to display value of selected variable in the log pane.
  • You can use Save Variable Data / Save Data to File actions to save data to files.

great support!

next step reached!
fyi:
in the old configuration (nicewatch 5) we did the "saving task"
in the main dialog "Save data received" by activating the checkbox "Save data received by the trigger to file""

with your example i changed this saving into an Actions task --> Save Data to File and setting some variables correct!

well, now my next imported trigger loads the xml file and save the file in a "job file" (extension *.job) (see attachment: i renamed to *.txt)

but in the Nicelabel 2017 the job extension is not supported anymore ?
what is your recommendation to create a printfile depending on variables in the file?

regards michael

hi saso

first i want to apologize for my confuse postings :(

i still have some troubles getting all existing triggers working ...

so i started from the scratch and did as follow:
+ imported trigger´s from old NiceWatch 5 configuartion
+ did some modifications and now i am struggling with the following (last) trigger:
1) first trigger receives data from a SAP host and store file as *xml
2) secound trigger: detect *.xml files (and delete after processed)
  • a) create a create txt file:
content of the textfile is very simple: "C:\nlspooljob\EA01\EA01___20180620160715_1.000.job"
    b) creates a job file: (content see below: e.g EA01___20180620160715_1.000.job)
    c) create nlbl file: (from a labeltemplate: e.g C:\Labels\printlabels\EA01___20180620160715_1.000.nlbl)
3) third trigger: detect *.txt files (and delete after processed)
and run content of the jobfile: is very simply: -->e.g. "C:\nlspooljob\EA01\EA01___20180620160715_1.000.job"

my problem is the trigger´s creates all neccessary files without error messages but NO printfile is generated
expected file according the example should be: C:\Spool\EA01_Spool\EA01___20180620160715_1.000.prn
see parameter PORT in job file below.

thank you for all hints in advance

regards michael
